1. Be honest about lifestyle

Are you OK with frequent transfers? Do you want a Delhi-only career? Will field/raid work suit you, or do you want office hours? The post you pick will define your next 30 years — salary differences fade after the first promotion.

2. Compare promotion ladders, not just entry pay

Inspector Income Tax starts at Pay Level 7 but reaches Pay Level 10/11 in 12-15 years. ASO (CSS) starts at Pay Level 7 too, but stays at Level 7 for years before becoming Section Officer. AAO starts highest (Level 8 Gazetted) but is geographically limited. Long-term, the trajectory matters more than the first pay slip.

3. Check qualification fit

JSO needs 60% Math in Class 12 or Statistics at degree level. Statistical Investigator Grade-II needs Stats / Maths / Economics / CS / Data Science / AI at graduation. AAO State and AAO Accounts (State) need regional language proficiency at matriculation level. Don't lock a preference you can't qualify for.

4. Don't blindly chase the "popular" post

Internet rankings often glorify AEO and Inspector Income Tax. Real fit depends on you — someone who hates frequent transfers will burn out in those cadres. JSO, Auditor, and Accountant deliver excellent work-life balance for a slightly lower salary peak.
